THE HISTORY OF THE "CRUSCO" PEPPER

Imported to Lucania from the Antilles in the 16th century for its health benefits—thanks to its content of vitamins A, B, C, PP, and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus—the “crusco” pepper has found the ideal soil for its cultivation in Basilicata. This type of pepper is sun-dried and made crunchy to become what is known as peperone crusco. The word crusco in the Lucanian dialect actually refers to the crunchiness of this fruit vegetable. Today, it can be enjoyed in two versions: fried or baked, thanks to the centuries-old tradition passed down by the farmers of Lucania.

DISCOVER THE STORY OF THE CRUSCO PEPPER

Brought to Lucania from the Antilles in the 16th century, the crusco pepper quickly became a local treasure—prized not only for its unmistakable flavor, but also for its rich content of vitamins A, B, C, PP, and essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Today, it thrives in the sun-drenched soil of Basilicata Region (formerly Lucania Region), where tradition meets flavor. The peppers are sun-dried and made irresistibly crunchy—hence the name crusco, which in the local dialect means “crispy.” Thanks to generations of Lucanian farmers who have preserved this culinary gem, you can now savor it in two delicious ways: lightly fried or oven-roasted. A true taste of Southern Italy’s heritage in every bite!
